The Gift of Reciprocity
This month, our journey through the Yamas and Niyamas – yoga’s ethical teachings – continues with an exploration of Asteya or non-stealing. As I delve into this principle, I’m struck with the clarity that the very concept of ownership is the fuel perpetuating our culture of stealing. Conversely, the deep knowing that nothing can be owned feels foundational to all of the indigenous cultures that I have experienced. This way of living cultivates systems of reciprocity, gratitude and generosity rather than ones based on selfishness, greed and scarcity. The ancient teaching of Asteya invites us to remember that everything we possess or even experience is a precious gift and we are asked to receive and respond to life’s gifts from this perspective. Asteya inspires us to develop the competency to fully receive what is given to us, whether it comes in the form of great bounty or profound suffering. Experiencing life this way, we are constantly growing ourselves and our world into its fullest potential. It is clear that systems based on individuality, ownership and dominion are pathways to suffering destruction. As I open my mind and heart to this profound teaching, I’m asking myself these questions:
What are ways I steal from others in my thoughts, words or actions?
How am I stealing from my own life through thoughts, speech or a lack of listening to and tending my needs?
Am I prioritizing a life that cultivates my highest capabilities?
How can I honor our beloved mother earth with all of my life choices?
What I deeply appreciate about the vast teachings and practices of yoga is how they guide us to live our lives so we remember our connection with each other, with ourselves and help us dissolve the illusion that we are separate. As I witness the tragic destruction of our earth and harm caused by economic and political systems created from believing we are separate, I am filled with hope by the power and resilience of these ancient teachings. Underground there is a web much like mycelium that is guiding us to remember our way home to interconnectedness and to manifest a new path forward where love is the foundation and the destination.
Much love,
Sue
